Star and Thaddeus were married in Lake Lure, North Carolina. Their closest friends and immediate family were in attendance for their intimate ceremony and reception. The couple found me through a former groom/longtime friend. He had only one thing to suggest when they told him they were getting married – hire me as their photographer! It makes me so happy to be referred by friends that I had photographed on their wedding day. I always adore being referred by clients, but am especially thankful for this one, as they have become dear friends, with Star and I often taking adventures and playing in the mountains together.
Star and Thaddeus wanted to be married outside in the mountains and near the Rocky Broad River. The Rocky Broad has always been special to them and it happens to be the river feeding the lake, so they knew it was the place. They connected with Shea Williams at Larkin’s on the Lake and her husband, Bo, who manages the marina and beach area at the lake to make it happen. With their off season wedding (1 week before the beach opened!), they were able to rent the entire beach for the day and marry at the gazebo. It was so much fun to look across the lake at their reception starting as we finished up photos across the lake.
The wedding day came together with lots of love and DIY projects. The ladies made the bouquets, boutonnieres and the flowers for the aisle on the day of the wedding all from $100 in pink cascade bouquets from Ingle’s grocery store. Friends helped decorate, and the caterer, Larkin’s on the Lake, handled just about everything else. With Star’s unique name the star theme came naturally, with stars on her hairpiece, earrings and her awesome tattoo. The pavilion on the beach was decorated with tulle and hanging stars, star candle holders, and star-shaped plant-able wildflower wedding favors – even the cake was star shaped! Holly with Sweet Monkey bakery did a wonderful job with such a special design. The bride and her mother made the terrariums after taking a class at BB Barnes; they were gorgeous and a big hit at the reception. With all the effort and love involved, they were able to pull off the entire wedding within their budget.
Their ceremony, officiated by Chaplain Dennis Klein, was perfect for this off-beat bride and groom. They had a harpist playing, with the sweet notes carrying through the lakeside site as the ladies entered and the newlyweds exited. After taking time for photos by the gazebo, we headed to the beach for the reception. Their friend, Josh Crawley a.k.a. DJ 50 Cal, was the dj/emcee for the party. The couple made their entrance with the groom dancing his way in, much to the bride’s surprise. They ate wonderful food from Larkin’s, they danced and played on the beach into the night. Truly a wonderful day to celebrate two people in love!
As a sad note, shortly after the wedding, one of the groomsmen, Josh Shreve, passed away. He was such a high-energy, contagiously joyful spirit – I took lots of photos of him that day that made it into the final edit. The wedding album had just arrived and was delivered it just days before the sad news. The couple had gotten pocket copies of their book and Josh was so so excited about his – and was probably overjoyed seeing how much he appeared in the book, reinforcing how special he was to the couple. Breaks my heart to know how much this guy gave for those he loved…so young…you never know! Hug your loved ones if you can and those too far away, call to let them know what they mean to you. Rest in Peace, Josh. Thankful to have met and captured you.
Congratulations to you, Star and Thaddeus! Thank you for letting me capture your special day and for being my friends. Much love to you two and wishing you the best of EVERYTHING!!
